Workers at the Hollywood West Fred Meyer had a safety deadline of four hours to act to salvage thousands of perishable items after the store lost power during the snowstorm Tuesday morning.
But icy conditions in Portland prevented food pantries from getting trucks to the store to pick up the load in time, Fred Meyer spokesperson Jeffery Temple said Wednesday. Two food pantries confirmed that they wouldn’t have been able to pick up the food. ....

A Fred Meyer store in Northeast Portland threw out thousands of chilled food items on Tuesday after a store spokesperson said it went bad during a power outage, but community members are outraged that the food was not donated.
In a statement, Fred Meyer said that the food was spoiled and had to be disposed of due to lack of refrigeration. They said food was unfit for consumption or donation.
Still, some community members are questioning the store s Zero Hunger, Zero Waste program and asking why the food wasn t donated before it went bad. ....
