[File photo] Two people were taken to hospital after car hit a parked grader on the Bluff Highway early on Thursday morning. A St John spokesman said a person with moderate injuries and a person with minor injuries were taken to Southland Hospital. The crash happened on the highway between Elles and Kew roads about 12.15am, a police spokeswoman said. The grader was stationary at the time and was damaged in the crash, she said. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is currently doing multi-million dollar roadworks on that stretch of the highway, including building a roundabout at the Elles Rd intersection. ....

Creed Perkins, 19, entered a not guilty plea to a charge of failing to stop or ascertain injury or death after a crash when he appeared in the Invercargill District Court on Tuesday. Defence lawyer Tanya McCullum said Perkins had not elected trial by jury, and it would be dealt with at a judge-alone trial. Perkins was remanded to reappear on June 14. Another man, 22, with interim name suppression, is charged with excess breath alcohol causing death and a charge of failed to stop or ascertain injury or death after a crash. Robyn Edie/Stuff Emergency services at the scene of an incident involving a train, parallel to Bluff Highway, near the west end of Janet street, Invercargill. One person has died after being hit by a train in Invercargill. A police spokesperson said emergency services were called to the crash on Bluff Highway between Nith St and Janet St at 4.25pm on Monday. Trains on the line adjacent to Bluff Highway were stopped while police conducted a scene examination, but have since reopened. Police were still making inquiries and had no further comment, the spokesperson said. At least six police cars and an ambulance were at the scene, as well as Southland police area commander inspector Mike Bowman. ....
