Averett University has recently received the First-gen Forward designation by the Center for First-generation Student Success, an initiative of NASPAâStudent Affairs Administrators in Higher Education and The Suder Foundation, which recently announced the 2021-22 First-gen Forward cohort. This designation recognizes institutions of higher education that have demonstrated a commitment to improving experiences and advancing outcomes of first-generation college students â students who are the first in their immediate family to attend college. Selected institutions receive professional development, community-building experiences and a first look at the Centerâs research and resources. Almost half of Averettâs entering class are first-generation college attendees. Nearly 100 percent of Averett students qualify for some form of financial assistance, with 43 percent of the student body qualifying this year for Pell grants. ....
On Friday, community organizations and volunteers rallied together for another first dose COVID-19 vaccine clinic, this time at the new location of the former JCPenney location at the Danville Mall. The Virginia Department of Health, Sovah Health, City of Danville, Pittsylvania County, Averett University, Danville Community College, the Danville Fire Department and more partnered to make Fridayâs event happen. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.,158 volunteers worked to make sure 1,200 citizens received their vaccines. The addition of the former JCPenney store as a location for vaccines comes with several benefits, including the space to vaccinate 3,000 people in a twelve hour clinic if provided vaccine supply. ....
