The Phantom Inauguration

AP Photo/Julio Cortez
Phantom pain is pain that a person feels in a body part, usually a limb, that is no longer there. That’s kind of how yesterday’s Presidential Inauguration felt. The limb missing was the lack of supporters and even protestors at the event. BOTH are part of American democracy, and both were totally restricted from the Capitol Mall.
The Inauguration is an American tradition, but regular Americans weren’t allowed to be a part. How wrong is that? How difficult could it have been to pull off an event that allowed people with 28,000 National Guard troops in place to keep the peace? ....

DHS Nominee; Trump's Revenge? MLK's Dream | RealClearPolitics

Good morning, it’s Monday, Jan. 18, 2021. Over the weekend, the human race hit a grim milestone: The novel coronavirus that spread rapidly out of central China a year ago has now claimed 2 million lives. That’s the official tally compiled by Johns Hopkins University. When you think that China’s government still admits to only 4,800 deaths in the world’s most populous nation and where this contagion originated the true number is almost certainly significantly higher.
In two days, when Joseph R. Biden Jr. takes the oath of office as the 46
th U.S. president, the number of Americans felled by this pandemic will have surged past 400,000. Biden has vowed to vastly bolster the government’s vaccination efforts. I pray that he follows through on that promise. ....

Biden Stimulus; Big Tech and Free Speech; Quote of the Week

Good morning, it’s Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, the day of the week when I reprise a quote meant to be inspiring or elucidating. Today’s comes from a speech by Martin Luther King Jr., born this day in 1929. His address on Oct. 26, 1967, in Philadelphia wasn’t about civil rights per se, although he would talk on that subject at Saint Joseph’s University that same day and then deliver opening remarks at a “Stars for Freedom” event at the Spectrum featuring Harry Belafonte, Sidney Portier, and Aretha Franklin.
First, however, King delivered a fatherly pep talk to the student body at Barratt Junior High School in Philly. Included in that 20-minute address were words to live by for people of any race, of any age, in any era. They are as uplifting now as they were 54 years ago. ....

Hello, it’s Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021. President Trump got himself impeached again, and in record time: one week between the commission of offense, indictment, and a vote in the House of Representatives. Wednesday was notable in another way, too: For the second time this month, U.S. deaths from COVID-19 surpassed 4,000 in a single day. Despite the presence of a vaccine, January is set to be the deadliest month yet. Nearly 40,000 Americans have died 14 days into 2021. The worldwide total during the past year has now surpassed 2 million souls.
Viruses are a formidable adversary for humans, even if we’re doing everything right. That was not the case with this contagion. The institutions tasked with protecting us failed to do so, lapses exacerbated by dishonest, dysfunctional politics. ....

Biden's Choice; Wolf Resigns; Social Silencing

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021. As House Democrats rush to impeach Donald Trump for the second time, tortured commentary has become the norm and not only among political partisans. Perhaps the most unsettling was the media’s sudden fixation with the president’s access to “nuclear launch codes.” Yes, this is a political talking point meant to justify impeaching a guy even as moving vans are scheduled to arrive at the White House. But as the cable news talking heads repeated it uncritically hour after hour, its effect was to terrorize their own viewers. Is that a sustainable business model? ....
