Mt Washington Commission applies for mediation help

FRANCONIA NOTCH — Help in learning to deal with divisive and thorny issues could be available in the near future. Members of the Mount Washington Commission voted unanimously at its June 4 meeting at Cannon Mountain’s Peabody Lodge to apply to participate in the Harvard Negotiation and Mediation Clinical Program of the Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Mass., according to the meeting minutes recently released by the commission. This in-person meeting was chaired by state Sen. Jeb Bradley of Wolfeboro. “It’s an opportunity to help facilitate agreement among the summit partners for a master plan that will put the mountain good hands for the future,” said Commissioner Sarah Stewart of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Ribbon cut at Umbagog Lake State Park bathhouse

CAMBRIDGE — “This bathhouse probably has the best view of any in our whole country,” said Commissioner Sarah Stewart of the state Department of Natural and Cultural Resources during a ribbon-cutting on Thursday, July 15, at Lake Umbagog State Park. The ceremony officially marked the completion of the new two-story structure overlooking the 7,850-acre shallow lake rimmed by forested mountains. COVID-19 distancing and mask requirements prevented the state from marking the occasion in 2020 when the bathhouse was first opened to public use in the state-owned campground off Route 26. The Division of Parks and Recreation calls the handsome shingled building a visitor services building because its facilities include both men’s and women’s toilet rooms, a family bathroom, three showers, a laundry room, and pot-washing and dishwashing area.

State holds OHRV meeting on Route 2 parking lot

GORHAM — What appeared to the selectmen to be a simple adjustment that would roll back the clock some five years during the six warmer weather months at the state-owned parking lot on Route 2 has turned out to be more complicated than anticipated. Last fall, the board asked the state to stop allowing OHRVs to be loaded or unloaded from trailers or pickup trucks at the state-owned parking lot on Route 2 (Lancaster Road) between May 23 and Nov. 30. After the state had developed a new alternative OHRV parking lot off Route 16 (North Main Street), north of the Depot Restaurant, this looked like an easy-peasy way to rid that neighborhood of the noise and dust that ATVs create. Access to the OHRV trail network from the new Route 16 parking lot is located adjacent to the black railroad trestle.

Federal grant money is available for recreational projects

CONCORD — The New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation has announced that Grant Round 32 of the Land and Water Conservation Fund is now open. The LWCF State and Local Assistance Program of the National Park Service is intended to preserve and enhance opportunities for public outdoor recreation. Various levels of local government including cities, towns, counties, and school districts are eligible to sponsor projects and apply for financial assistance. Awarded grant funds are available on a reimbursement basis, and may be used for the development of facilities and/or acquisition of land for public outdoor recreation use. Project sponsors are required to commit to a minimum 50 percent matching share of total project costs, and maintain funded sites as public outdoor recreation areas in perpetuity. The New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation administers the program within the State.
