Yuval Pinter writes:
When an English speaker doesn t understand a word one says, it s Greek to me . When a Hebrew speaker encounters this difficulty, it sounds like Chinese . I ve been told the Korean equivalent is sounds like Hebrew .
Has there been a study of this phrase phenomenon, relating different languages on some kind of Directed Graph?
Well, there s a Wikipedia article on the topic Greek to me with a table of correspondences, a page at Omniglot It s all Greek to me with a similar table, and a forum thread at wordreference.com. Michael Quinion has a Q&A on the origins of the English expression, which includes the suggestion that the Spanish-American word gringo comes from the expression “hablar en griego”. ....

A South Dakota politician with a history of stirring up racial controversy is using a Black History Month resolution to attack the Democratic Party and claim the U.S. has a “positive history on race and slavery.”
The resolution has raised some ire in South Dakota, a reliably Red state with a meager Black population. South Dakota has about 900,000 people; only 1,400, fewer than 2 percent, are Black.
“Politicizing Black History month is a low blow,” Nikki Gronli, vice chair of the South Dakota Democratic Party, told The Daily Beast, calling the resolution “shameful.” ....

SDSU School Newspaper editorial throws cold water on new Anti-Vaxxer legislation

SDSU School Newspaper editorial throws cold water on new Anti-Vaxxer legislation
From the SDSU Collegian, the student newspaper editorial board at our states largest university recognizes the ill-advised nature of the anti-vaxxer bill that’s come back before the state legislature:
House Bill 1097 is titled “An Act to provide for philosophical exceptions to required vaccinations.” The bill, if it would become law, allows individuals to opt out of vaccination requirements in educational setting. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Tom Pischke and Rep. Phil Jenson.
and..
Not all of the five remaining legislators have sponsored this year’s edition of the anti-vaccination legislation; in fact, only HB 1097’s prime sponsor, Pischke, decided to revive the concept.  ....

Rep. Phil Jensen doubling down, bringing a second and possibly nuttier anti-vaxxer measure

Today, we have a second anti-vaxxer measure, solely sponsored by State Representative Phil Jensen:
Nothing in this chapter may be construed to interfere with each person’s inalienable right to bodily integrity. The right to bodily integrity includes being free from any threat or compulsion to accept any medical intervention, including any vaccination.
No person may, as a result of refusing to accept a medical intervention, including any vaccination, be subjected to discrimination or retaliation with respect to association, education, employment, housing, property rights, public accommodations, or public services.
So.. if I’m reading this correctly, not only would grade schools have to accept people who are not vaccinated against measles and polio.. Phil’s bill would have even farther ranging consequences. ....
