Get in your car and take a drive to the corner of Southwest 53rd Street and Philomath Boulevard in Corvallis. Almost any direction you head from there will lead you to new housing, housing under construction or bare land that is proposed for housing. Neighbors have consistently expressed concerns for years as projects such as Sylvia (37 homes) and Ridgecrest (46 homes) have come forward, while the 118-acre Marys Annexation could add up to 2,000 homes (see map at right/be for the full list of projects). Traffic is a major concern, particularly on narrow West Hills Road. Neighbors also are worried about loss of open space, wetlands issues and the fact that the region needs a âspecific area planâ to guide development. They also think the streetlights are too bright. ....
The city of Corvallis has a plan to bring organization out of the chaos that is the camping situation at Pioneer Park â but the plan will mean severe disruptions for folks temporarily living there. The parking lot of the park off Philomath Boulevard has over the past few weeks added dozens of RV and car campers, with a sprinkling of tents as well. On Dec. 7 the Corvallis City Council passed a resolution calling for the addition of portable restrooms, hand-washing stations and trash receptacles. City officials also want to stripe the parking lot to keep campers away from the Marys River and to set up designated spaces. Last Friday those in the camp received notice that they must vacate the camp by 10 p.m. Dec. 28 and apply for the spots that will be created. ....
