The class of 2021 persevered through almost three semesters of shifting between learning virtually, in person and a mix of both. They learned how to set schedules for themselves at home, stay motivated to complete school work and keep in touch with friends. After those semesters unlike any others, those who have graduated said they enjoyed having an in-person ceremony their family members could attend, and those who are about to graduate said they are looking forward to this, too.
The number of new cases of COVID-19 among Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS) staff and students decreased this week. The number of students and staff going into quarantine also declined. Between April 29 and May 5, five new cases of COVID-19 were reported among WAPS students and staff, down from seven the previous week. There were also 77 staff members and students who went into quarantine between April 29 and May 5, representing a decrease from 123 the week prior. “These cases were from a community spread, which is what we’re finding when we do have positive cases in,” Superintendent Annette Freiheit said at the School Board’s May 6 meeting. “Our students that are getting this are actually very asymptomatic and come to school, and then start to show symptoms and end up getting tested.” ....
Winona charter schools find new authorizers (2/3/2021)
Bluffview Montessori School and Ridgeway Community School are one step closer to having new charter school authorizers after the state revoked the authorizing status of their current authorizer, Winona Area Public Schools (WAPS). New authorizers have accepted the charter schools’ applications, and the schools and authorizers are now waiting for approval from the state. By law, each charter school in the state must have an authorizer with whom it has a contract outlining performance expectations. The state revoked WAPS’ status as a charter school authorizer last year following four years of WAPS failing to meet Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) requirements. WAPS is expected to remain the authorizer for Bluffview and Ridgeway School until June 30. ....
