Fall of Tigray capital: Ethiopia on the brink of meltdown without genuine negotiations

July 4, 2021
The humbling of the Ethiopian and Eritrean armies by the Tigray Defence Forces (TDF) has precipitated the crumbling of the Ethiopian state.
The civilian leader of Tigray’s government, Debretsion Gebremichael, said after the recapture of the Tigrayan capital, Mekelle, last week that Tigray’s future as a part of Ethiopia was in doubt.
“The trust has been broken completely,” Gebremichael said. “If they don’t want us, why should we stay?” The future, he said, would depend on “the politics at the centre”.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is an Oromo but not trusted by the Oromo separatists. ....

What African Leaders Want at Biden's Climate Summit | Center for Strategic and International Studies

April 21, 2021
President Joseph Biden has invited five African presidents and 35 other world leaders to join him at the Leaders Summit on Climate on April 22-23. The African contingent consisting of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) president Félix Tshisekedi, Gabonese president Ali Ben Bongo, Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta, Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari, and South African president Cyril Ramaphosa will likely press for financial support to undertake climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives. In addition, each will seek to advance domestic and personal goals at this high-profile event.
Africa’s participation in the summit reflects the continent’s indispensability as an actor in the world’s efforts to reduce emissions and limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Whether it is deforestation, desertification, or rising sea levels, it is impossible to address the worst impacts of climate change without Africa’s input and cooperation. Even though ....

A hungry planet is an angry planet: Has capitalism fail...

In truth, winning the US presidential election and then the Senate ultimately depended on a tactical decision of grassroots activists to concentrate on mobilising disaffected would-be non-voters to vote out Trump. If Biden’s presidency is to mark a new beginning for democracy it needs to start with introspection and a new path away from an unregulated system of economy and state-surrender to the markets that has deepened misery for billions and imperilled our planet.
If we don’t grasp this nettle now an even bleaker future lies ahead.
To encourage us it’s worth recalling how, in 1989, lifelong communist Joe Slovo put on his big-girl underpants and wrote a reflection on socialism that required a deep and difficult introspection. The article, ....
