Snipes, the feathered sort, inhabit wetlands and lakes but in Ireland the breed is on the Red List, meaning it is of high conservation concern. Snipe dinghies (the wooden version) were common in Northern Ireland from the 1930s till the 60s but could have been put on a Red List after that, as their numbers suffered a marked decline. But I m told that Fermanagh supports a breeding population as well as an over-wintering population of the feathered variety, and if you listen, you can hear their distinctive drumming and chipping. ....

Jenny Laing reappointed council leader in Aberdeen after Holyrood election


Fellow councillors-turned-MSPs, the SNP’s Jackie Dunbar and Audrey Nicoll, are understood to be doing the same.
Shift in power sharing arrangement
Aberdeen Labour leader Mrs Laing has already served as council leader during the previous council session – when her group was the largest within the ruling coalition.
She replaced now Lord Provost Barney Crockett as leader in 2014, remaining in place until after the 2017 election while the legal practicalities of installing co-leaders were ironed out.
Mrs Laing said she was “delighted” with the unanimous agreement to the new allocation of the top positions and said she would focus on Aberdeen’s “social and economic recovery” from Covid-19. ....

Aberdeen City Council will elect a new co-leader.
Aberdeen City Council will elect a new co-leader at a special meeting on Thursday afternoon, it has been confirmed.
Conservative group leader Douglas Lumsden is stepping back from the role after being elected as a north-east regional MSP at last week’s Scottish Parliament election.
A new co-leader to serve alongside Labour’s Jenny Laing is to be appointed, but requires a vote by elected members.

IPSWICH business owners might be sleeping a little easier after emerging as one of the biggest winners under the 2021-22 budget.
As Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced the budget on Tuesday it was revealed that small to medium-sized enterprises would be offered some respite through tax cuts following a year of uncertainty.
The corporate tax rate for SME’s is set to dip to 25 per cent from July 1 this year from its previous 30 per cent, delivering about $16 billion in savings by 2023-24.

It comes as Mr Frydenberg cited grassroot businesses as a key pillar to aid Australia’s economic recovery in the wake of the pandemic. ....
