Letters: Appalling decision to give £300,000 to support Tour de Yorkshire

Cycling money I WAS appalled to read the news that the cash strapped Richmondshire District Council have now voted a total donation of £300,000 to organisers of next year’s Tour de Yorkshire cycle race (D&S Times, June 18) without any positive expectation of financial return. While some council members were opposed, I feel those in favour should be ashamed. There are other more deserving local causes, infrastructure and services. My local councillor is informed of my opinion. Robert Senior, Scotton. Silly title REGARDING the request for funding for the so called Tour de Yorkshire (D&S Times, June 18). I object to the title for this commercial event.

Knowles Wins Auburn University Club Invitational

Knowles Wins Auburn University Club Invitational   Philip Knowles birdied two of the last three holes for a two-shot win at the Auburn University Club Invitational. (Media/PGA TOUR) In This Article AUBURN, Alabama It was just under a year ago that Philip Knowles withdrew from the LOCALiQ Series event at Auburn University Club because he was so disappointed with his score. He was 5-under after 10 when things started to spiral. He made two double bogeys, on Nos. 11 and 14, leaving him so frustrated he just wanted the round to end. Saturday, back on the same course, Knowles got his chance at redemption and built on his third-round lead, finishing the day with a 5-under 67 to win by two strokes and clinch the Forme Tour’s Auburn University Club Invitational title.

Knowles 7-under 65 marks low score of the day, top spot on leaderboard

Knowles’ 7-under 65 marks low score of the day, top spot on leaderboard In This Article AUBURN, Alabama Slow and steady wins the race, or at least it has paid off thus far for Philip Knowles, who shot a 7-under 65 in his third round to put him at 18-under overall and in the top spot after 54 holes of the Auburn University Club Invitational. Knowles has a one-shot advantage on Bryson Nimmer and two over Alex Smalley as they head into the final round Saturday. “Overall, today was really good. I made a lot of birdies the last couple of days but was just plagued by some squares on the scorecard,” he said of his bogeys. “I kept it clean today, which was nice. I’ve improved every day and this golf course sets up really well for me.”

Letters to the editor: Farm subsidies, special Sandsend and flytippers

Subsidy changes I READ with interest your very informative article about a survey of the concerns of farmers and landowners regarding the shift from the EU’s Basic Payment subsidy to our government’s proposal to replace it with the ELM Scheme (D&S Times, Dec 11). Although I sympathise with their anxiety about losing the EU subsidy, there must surely be a realisation that in our market economy they must become more efficient to survive. To rely on aid for their agricultural industry may now be looked on by other industries to be a bit unfair and almost immature. It could be that the industry, in a previous era could possibly have been regarded by some as an ignoble “lame duck” and should be left to fend for itself – as other industries do.
