Candidates vying to become Warwickshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner in May have called on the government to prioritise police officers for the coronavirus vaccine.

Last month the government reiterated that age rather than occupation would continue to be the principle by which the jab is offered, but many believe frontline workers such as police and teachers should be given priority.
Earlier this month Ben Twomey, Labour candidate for May’s Warwickshire police and crime commissioner elections, described the news as a “kick in the teeth” for frontline officers. ....

WALLETS might be a bit lighter from April as three councils and the police all plan to hike their share of council tax.
Stratford District Council is currently consulting on its draft budget, which proposes the maximum permitted £5 rise for Band D properties.
Warwickshire County Council is looking at a two per cent rise in its share.
Warwickshire’s police and crime commissioner Philip Seccombe outlined his spending plans last week for the forthcoming financial year, which include the recruitment of 41 more officers, additional special constables and the opening of a new force control room. However, all this would come at a price, with the police precept rising 6.3 per cent – or £1.25 more per month for a Band D property. ....

PLANS to axe nine jobs from a police team dedicated to investigating domestic abuse have been branded a “total disgrace”.
The latest lockdown has seen another surge in domestic abuse, with nine people killed in the UK in the past week alone.

Stark figures released just after Christmas showed that, far from being a season of togetherness, for many the festive period meant domestic violence and abuse.
In late December, domestic violence accounted for half of England’s police force workloads. In Warwickshire, that figure was even higher, with 38 out of 60 arrests in Christmas week related to domestic abuse – eight of them in the Stratford area. ....
