Georgia House Speaker criticizes bills attacking trans athletes

Georgia House Speaker David Ralston (Photo by Patrick Saunders)
House Speaker David Ralston called anti-transgender bills introduced by his Republican colleagues this year “a solution in search of a problem.”
Ralston, who represents House District 7 in Blue Ridge, made the comments on GPB’s “Political Rewind” podcast on April 23. He commented on three bills filed during this year’s legislative session that targeted transgender student-athletes.
“Well, sometimes we have issues that come along that are almost solutions in search of a problem, and I think we have to be very, very careful with those kinds of measures,” he said. “I have been very careful with those.” ....

NCAA warns Georgia against banning transgender athletes

State Reps. Philip Singleton, Marty Harbin and Rick Jasperse filed bills targeting transgender student-athletes.
The NCAA issued a firm warning to Georgia and other states considering banning transgender students from sports – discriminate against them and risk losing upcoming championships.
But if the NCAA hoped its statement on transgender participation would convince lawmakers to pump the brakes on anti-trans legislation, the Florida House responded two days later by passing a bill that bans transgender females from competing on women’s sports teams.
On Monday, the NCAA said it “firmly and unequivocally” supports transgender student-athletes in college sports.
“Inclusion and fairness can coexist for all student-athletes, including transgender athletes, at all levels of sport,” the NCAA said in a prepared statement. “Our clear expectation as the Association’s top governing body is that all student-athletes will be treated with dignity and resp ....

COLUMN: The legislative onslaught against trans people reveals recycled bigotry

Today’s transphobia is yesterday’s homophobia.
While homophobia is of course still alive and well, much of the transphobia that is spouted these days is in many ways rehashed arguments against gay and lesbian cisgender people in recent decades.
Being transgender was only removed from the World Health Organization’s classification of mental disorders as recently as 2019, and it wasn’t until 2013 when the American Psychiatric Association appropriately renamed “gender identity disorder” to “gender dysphoria.”
Compare this to how homosexuality was declassified from being a mental disorder by the APA in 1973 and the WHO in 1990.
Or we can talk about how cis lesbians in locker rooms was once public discourse for fear they would prey on cis straight women. Sounds a lot like the arguments against trans women in public restrooms. ....
