Africantown builds a museum for the slave ship Clotilda

On a February afternoon, a squad of re-enactors dressed as nineteenth century black calvarymen, known as Buffalo Soldiers, presented the colors at a ceremony to start construction of Africatown Heritage House. The museum will open this summer to tell the story of America’s last slave ship, the people it carried, and their legacy.
Because this is serious stuff to make sure that we never, ever forget the story of those people who made this place what it is. We won t forget, said Darron Patterson, president of the Clotilda Descendants Association. ....

The sacred nature of the Oldman River to the Siksikaitsitapi or Blackfoot Confederation, especially the Piikani or Peigan, is well documented. Now ridges in the Upper Oldman watershed are being desecrated by companies such Atrum Coal and Cabin Ridge, with worse to possibly come. Since 2017, they have received permits from the AER to drill up to 5,600 wells from 2,100 well sites. ....

Range Rover crashes into shop front in Addington Road, Margate

A Range Rover has crashed into a former funeral directors in Margate town centre.
The 4x4 careered into the building - now a sign shop - in Addington Road at about 12.15pm.
The badly damaged Range Rover
The shop s windows were smashed and a wall outside was damaged.
Police closed the road while paramedics attended the scene.
The male driver was not seriously injured but the car has been badly damaged.
Although the shop is still owned by Gore Bros funeral directors and has its signage outside, it is now occupied by All Sign Solutions. ....

The Africatown Welcome Center is pictured on Friday, Oct. 19, 2012, in Mobile, Ala. At the time, the welcome center was housed in a mobile home across from the Old Plateau Cemetery. The new center will be located in the same spot, but it will be much larger (approximately 18,000 square feet) and serve as a tourist attraction. That project is being funded by RESTORE Act money. But before the project can move forward, an excavation is required to determine if any graves are located on the property.(Mike Kittrell/mkittrell@a­l.com) ....
