As we begin 2021, we are in a critical period with a new U.S. administration, a global pandemic, and a climate crisis. On Wednesday, January 27, 2021, Born Free USA hosted its annual State of Wildlife webinar, which explored how, with the help of our community of committed animal activists, Born Free USA will navigate the changing world to ensure the future of animals and their habitats.
The event featured Born Free USA leadership team and the opportunity to ask questions about the challenges facing animals and our plans to protect wildlife.

Born Free USA applauds yesterday’s reintroduction of the Big Cat Public Safety Act (H.R. 263) in the U.S. House of Representatives. Reintroduced by Representatives Mike Quigley (D-IL) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), this bill would ban the private possession of big cat species, with exemptions for zoos, universities, and bona fide sanctuaries. The bill also bans direct public contact with big cats, removing a strong incentive to breed big cats unchecked for profit. In December 2020, this important legislation passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, but was not taken up by the Senate before the end of the 116th Congress. Born Free USA calls on the newly gaveled-in 117th Congress to quickly pass the reintroduced bill.

Customs officials in Singapore made a grisly discovery last April at a port on the island s southern coast. Inside shipping containers supposedly transporting frozen beef from Nigeria to Vietnam, they found bloodstained sacks stuffed with 14 tons of scales stripped illegally from pangolins â scaly anteaters endemic to Africa and Asia. The seizure, worth about $38.7 million, is thought to be the largest bust of pangolin products globally in recent years.
People hunt pangolins for their meat, considered a delicacy in Asia, and for their scales, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat ills such as arthritis. Eight species are now vulnerable or endangered and, in 2016, more than 180 nations banned most cross-border commercial trade in them.
