Nearly a week after a fire destroyed a home in the Birch Hills area, support continues to pour in for the couple who lived there. Michelle Tarry was working in the yard moving bales on July 21 when through the haze of the already smoky sky, she noticed black smoke coming from the roof of her home. “I drove halfway up with the tractor and I noticed flame on a TV antenna that was on the side of the house, and so I just backed the tractor as far away from the house as I could and called 911,” she explained The overall structure of the house was saved, but due to smoke damage, both the house and the neighbouring garage are a write off. Miraculously though Michelle’s wedding dress was saved as well as some personal photos, including the one from her wedding day. ....

Herald File Photo On July 23 Government Relations Minister Don McMorris announced over $3.7 million in funding for the Transit Assistance for People with Disabilities program (TAPD). TAPD is an annual provincial grant program available to Saskatchewan municipalities who offer paratransit services. “This investment reinforces our commitment to building a more inclusive and accessible Saskatchewan,” McMorris said in a release. “Our government is proud of this investment to support municipalities in providing services to people with disabilities and reducing barriers to employment.” Paratransit is critical for people with disabilities as passengers use the service to travel to school, work, medical appointments and other daily activities. ....
Long serving Muskoday Volunteer Fire Department (MVFD) and Saskatchewan First Nation Emergency Management (SFNEM) member Randy Bair is being remembered this upcoming weekend in Melfort. The SFNEM are gathering on July 31 at the Kerry Vickar Centre to honour Randy’s legacy with their organizations. Bair passed away in January after a short battle with cancer but his legacy lives on, associate director for Saskatchewan First Nation Emergency Management, Michelle Vandevord, told northeastNOW. She saw this passion firsthand, she said, as Randy used his nearly 30 years of experience as a firefighter to go into schools to talk about fire prevention. “(Randy) spread that around provincially to First Nation communities and you can see the passion that Randy had for that when he was in the classroom. And I was very fortunate that, you know, he brought me up and trained and put that passion and instilled it with me as well.” ....
