NORWALK, Conn. One in 54 children aged 8 years old has autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, a recent study showed. Boys are more than four times as likely to have it than girls.
That’s a reason to freak out, special education activist Jeffry Spahr observed. But he said the pandemic, while “horrible,” presents an “opportunity to reimagine the workplace to make diversity inclusion and equity a reality.”

BRIDGEPORT An Ecuadorian citizen is accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old Norwalk girl he met at a Seaside Park soccer game.
Wilmer Mocha, 24, of Denver Avenue, was charged Monday with second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a child.
Police said Mocha told them he was unfamiliar with the laws of this country but believed it was all right to have sexual relations with the girl because she was about to turn 15.
“He had an inappropriate relationship with a minor,” Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Justina Moore said during Mocha’s arraignment Tuesday afternoon. She urged the judge to set a high bond. ....

Eden spent his early childhood in Haiti, with his mother and sister, Ingrid Benoit Louis, where he attended St Jean Evangelist School until he immigrated to the U.S. Growing up in Haiti for the first 12 years of his life, Eden enjoyed playing soccer, marbles and spending time with his cousins and friends. ....

Norwalk offers COVID-19 clinic just for NPS staff

NORWALK, Conn. A mass vaccination effort for Norwalk teachers, educators, and childcare professionals took a giant leap forward Wednesday with a closed vaccination clinic for Norwalk Public Schools staff.
“We’re very excited to be here,” Norwalk Superintendent of Schools Alexandra Estrella said at a Wednesday press event marking the vaccination drive at Brien McMahon High School, where comments touched on the reluctance many people feel toward getting vaccinated.
“I think we should do some ‘hip hip hoorays’ or something,” Norwalk Association of School Administrators (NASA) President Lynne Moore said. ....

COVID-19: Memorial observance on Monday

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk will be observing COVID-19 Memorial Day on Monday, Mayor Harry Rilling said. It will become a yearly event, every March 1.
This news comes as Norwalk has lost another two citizens to the coronavirus. According to Rilling’s Wednesday update, Norwalk’s death total is 207; one of the newly reported deaths was a person who was 80 years old, bringing the total for that age group to 100. The other victim was in his or her 60s.
COVID-19 Memorial Day was announced at Tuesday’s Common Council meeting. It’s a nationwide observance, as 500,000 Americans have lost their lives due to COVID-19. ....
