Credit Corinne Boyer / Ohio Valley Resource Roughly a million students attend college around the Ohio Valley, and the student-age population has an especially high rate of coronavirus infection. That’s why some public health advocates say schools should require that students be vaccinated.  However, a review by the Ohio Valley ReSource found that of 400 colleges and universities in Kentucky, Ohio, and West Virginia, only three have indicated that they will mandate COVID-19 vaccinations this fall.   The age group with the highest share of COVID-19 infections is under 30. About a fifth of all U.S. cases have occurred in people ages 18 to 29. In late April the American College Health Association, an organization that works to improve the health of college students and college campuses, recommended that schools make COVID-19 immunization mandatory for students.

Dec 11, 2020 COVID-19 has been a harsh reality in 2020, and permeated almost every aspect of everyone s daily life. Campus life has been no different. With the many changes college campuses faced in Kentucky, and around the world, EKU President David McFaddin said he wanted to find a way to give back to the university staff and employees. During the Dec. 10 Board of Regents meeting, McFaddin announced the Colonels Care Employee Initiative, which would give employees a $1,000 bonus. “I think this is one of the most important investments we have made to the university in the last several years,” McFaddin said. McFaddin explained this initiative is meant as a thank you to EKU’s staff who worked tirelessly to keep EKU’s students learning. For their hard work, the administration will give a $1,000 investment to every full-time employee who has been with employed at the Richmond-based college since Sept. 30, 2020.
