Auburn students to get more in-person instruction by the end of February

AUBURN Local students will get more in-person instruction beginning Feb. 24 by attending school every other Wednesday.
The School Committee voted 7-1 on Wednesday to approve the change, but many members said the proposal fell short of their expectations.
“I’m disappointed in this plan,” City Council representative Brian Carrier said. “I expected more in-person time. Four hours a week is not what I was hoping for.”
He said he was hoping for four full days a week of in-person instruction. The City Council made such a request weeks ago.
“Kids can play sports together, but they can’t go to school? I’m baffled by that. I see no sense,” Carrier said. “We need to get back to worrying about giving kids their education, what we’re paying for.” ....

Auburn City Council to require face coverings during meetings

AUBURN All Auburn city councilors will now be required to wear face coverings during City Council meetings.
In a 4-3 vote Monday night, the council approved an order stipulating the council will follow Gov. Janet Mills’ recent executive order on face coverings, providing the clearest stance city officials have made on masking during meetings.
The order was introduced by Councilor Katie Boss after coronavirus cases have surged in Maine, including in Androscoggin County, which has seen a number of recent outbreaks and school closures.
In response to the governor’s executive order, Mayor Jason Levesque issued a statement last week that said he would not wear a mask when “actively presiding” over meetings in order to make the deliberation more clear for online viewers, but Levesque wore a mask throughout Monday’s meeting. ....

AUBURN The School Committee has rejected a recommendation from the superintendent to increase daily instruction for struggling students.
The committee voted 4-4 on Wednesday night after a passionate debate on the proposal. Tie votes mean a motion fails.
Superintendent Connie Brown’s recommendation came in response to low math and reading scores on elementary school progress reports and news that as many as 100 freshmen are failing at least one class.

AUBURN A proposal to conduct all Auburn City Council meetings remotely due to Maine’s surge in COVID-19 cases was tabled indefinitely Monday night without discussion.
The order, proposed by Councilors Holly Lasagna and Katie Boss, would have returned the city to remote meetings for the first time since this spring.
With daily cases now greater than at any point when the council was previously conducting remote meetings, Lasagna said in a memorandum the council should return to remote meetings “to ensure the safety of our community and respect the lives of our families and neighbors and the livelihoods of our first responders and frontline workers.” ....
