Seagrasses Turn Back the Clock on Ocean Acidification

Expansive Study Shows Seagrass Meadows Can Buffer Ocean Acidification

Spanning six years and seven seagrass meadows along the California coast, a paper from the University of California, Davis, is the most extensive study yet of how seagrasses can buffer ocean acidification.
The study, published today in the journal Global Change Biology, found that these unsung ecosystems can alleviate low pH, or more acidic, conditions for extended periods of time, even at night in the absence of photosynthesis. It found the grasses can reduce local acidity by up to 30 percent.
“This buffering temporarily brings seagrass environments back to preindustrial pH conditions, like what the ocean might have experienced around the year 1750,” said co-author Tessa Hill, a UC Davis professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences and Bodega Marine Laboratory. ....

Will Airborne Wind Power Finally Fly in 2021?

An energy technology that even Google parent company and tech behemoth Alphabet couldn’t get to work might finally achieve commercial takeoff this year.
The German company SkySails Power last month announced that its energy kite concept would be taking to the skies this year on the Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius. This could move airborne wind closer to commercial success than Alphabet-backed airborne wind power technology developer Makani was able to get before it crashed out of the market last year.
“Starting in 2021, a large kite will lift off at the eastern coast of the island to generate electricity for the CEB [Central Electricity Board] grid from high-altitude winds,” SkySails stated in a press release. ....

South Korean Firm Touts Novel Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine Tower Concept

South Korean firm Odin Energy hopes to carve out a new niche with a vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) tower designed for urban settings.
The company’s circular tower concept can have up to 12 floors, each containing a central VAWT, allowing for much greater energy production per unit of area than would be possible with a single turbine.
As well as increasing total rated power, the company says the upper floors of its Odin towers can access higher wind speeds and thus deliver up to four times the average electricity production of a ground-mounted turbine.
Test documents seen by GTM show that a prototype tower achieved a 62 percent increase in power efficiency compared to a standalone turbine, based on an average 16.5 percent increase in wind speed. ....

Spain Tenders 3 Gigawatts of Renewables Under New Pay-as-Bid Model

Spain has launched a tender for up to 3.18 gigawatts of renewable generation in its first auction under a pay-as-bid model introduced earlier this year.
The model, similar to the contracts-for-difference program used in the U.K., aims to correct problems with auctions in 2016 and 2017. Those earlier auctions encouraged prices so low that developers essentially had to turn to merchant markets or bilateral power-purchase agreements to make a profit, said Madrid-based Brian Gaylord, principal analyst for Latin America and Southern Europe at Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables.
The 2016 and 2017 auctions followed years of minimal capacity additions caused by an unfavorable regulatory environment, and they came with the threat of price revisions every three years. That led some bidders to use the auctions as a way of securing capacity in order to sell energy on the open market. ....
