MUSINGS 27 January 2021
With focus on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, I recall my meetings and interview with his close aide, Captain Lakshmi Sahgal. This was in the summer of 2002 when she was named by the Left as its candidate to contest for the post of President of India. She was then around 88 years but looked much younger and fit. One of the reasons for this could be she was busy the entire day. She was vice - president of the All India Democratic Women’s Association. Netaji Subhas Chandra Boseâs daughter, Anita Bose Pfaff, was seen and heard on many news channels and online platforms last week, on January 23, her fatherâs 125th birth anniversary. In more than one interview, she said that she often feels that her fatherâs death spared him the agony of having to witness the Partition of India in the name of religion.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is in the news this year mainly for the fact that the start of his 125thbirth anniversary coincides with what will be a bitterly contested state election in his native state West Bengal in May. The Union government declared January 23 as ‘Parakram Divas’, or Valour Day, to commemorate his birth anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to address a rally in Kolkata on this day. The Mamata Banerjee government, sensing a BJP attempt to appropriate another Bengali icon, has announced plans to celebrate the day as ‘Desh Nayak Diwas’. Either ways, the legacy of an iconic freedom fighter has got another lease of life.
