Northwestern to match up in Big Ten Tournament this weekend

After a year disrupted by undisclosed injuries, Senior Ryan Deakin hasn’t been on the floor for long. Deakin’s matchup against No. 6 Brayton Lee in Northwestern’s (2-6, 2-6 Big Ten) last dual of the year against Minnesota (7-2, 7-2) marked only the third time all season he’s taken to the mat against a Big Ten opponent.
The bout was over before it really even started. The nation’s top ranked wrestler at 157, Deakin took a 6-0 lead out of the first period, one that saw all points scored in its last minute, two from a takedown with 20 seconds remaining and four more on a near fall right as the clock expired. He led 9-0 at the end of the second period and dominated a third period in which Lee barely had any time on attack. ....

Diggins finishes fourth in 10k freestyle at Nordic world ski championships

On another warm day at the Nordic world ski championships, Jessie Diggins wore a uniform more suited for summer training than for winter racing. The Afton native tried to stay cool in shorts and short sleeves Tuesday, but she just missed the medals with a finishing fourth in the 10-kilometer freestyle.
Temperatures in Oberstdorf, Germany, reached 58 degrees at race time and felt even toastier under a bright sun. Norway s Therese Johaug won in 23 minutes, 9.8 seconds, with Sweden s Frida Karlsson and Ebba Andersson finishing second and third. Diggins time of 24:21.8 was 5.1 seconds behind Andersson.
The finish was Diggins best thus far at these world championships, and she was the fastest of four U.S. women to race in the 10K. But the heat has been a significant obstacle for her. Tuesday, race organizers had to salt the course to keep the snow firm. ....

Should Iowa be wary of a slow start coming off of covid pause? That’s more or less what Kind of. asked me after Michigan lost to Penn State on Sunday. Well, yes and no. Penn State came off their pause by losing a couple big matches to Indiana wrestlers (need I say more?), and Michigan looked pretty slow this weekend against a good and a very good team. So why should Iowa be the exception? Well, first, they’re older. They’ve been here before, and they know exactly how to prepare. Seriously, this team is starting six seniors and two juniors. They’re also very driven. Eight of those ten starters had All-American or better hopes, and dreams of team title, cut short this time last year. Northwestern traveled to Minneapolis last Sunday in what may have been its last regular-season dual of the year. Coming off of a solid ranked win against Wisconsin a week prior, the ‘Cats looked to carry that momentum into a tough match against the Golden Gophers but managed to pick up only two wins in a 29-10 loss.
With its February 19 dual against top-ranked Iowa having been postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test, NU was given an extra few days of rest before taking on the red hot Gophers at The Barn. Minnesota entered the afternoon winners of four straight after handing Wisconsin a 27-7 loss just two days before. ....
