(WCSC) - Nonprofit organizations in South Carolina are seeing an increased need for services because of the COVID-19 pandemic. While they are working to meet those needs, a new study reveals some are struggling to keep afloat. Together SC, a statewide network of nonprofit organizations, worked with Kahle Strategic Insights to conduct a survey that looked at how the state’s nonprofits are functioning one year into the pandemic.

A South Carolina Food Bank Steps In The COVID-19 crisis puts rural African Americans at greatest risk for hunger. Loading food into car trunks at a Lowcountry Food Bank distribution event Brenda Shaw grew up in southeastern Ohio, where her mother was the food service director for their local school system. She spent her summers helping her mother sort through the free and reduced breakfast/lunch applications for students. As she got older, Shaw volunteered at her churchâs pantry. She eventually joined the board of directors of the Delaware County United Way and continued to volunteer at food distribution facilities in the region.

(WCSC) - The Lowcountry Food Bank says they are preparing their last food distribution before closing for the Christmas holiday, and they want to help hundreds. The need for donations is greater than ever this year, as Lowcountry Food Bank Chief Development Officer Brenda Shaw says they have seen a 500% increase in people coming in to get food over the last nine months. She says the most significant increase came in the last few weeks. Between Tuesday and Wednesday, the food bank says they are expecting to feed more than 500 families.
