Finding a new path on the frontline

Three women have taken a huge step and changed careers and are now at the for front of the covid-19 pandemic.
From kitchen staff to frontline Covid healthcare workers the trio embarked on a change they would never have thought possible, prior to the closure of the ward at Wigton Hospital.
Brenda Lock, Penny Deakin and Angela Davenport were part of the kitchen staff based in Wigton Community Hospital. Angela also worked at Maryport Victoria Cottage Hospital.
Now, all three are providing critical support as Home Care Practitioners (HCPs) in the Keswick and Solway Integrated Care Communities.
All three have gone on to further training completing their care certificates, various courses provided by the Trust and courses in medication, dementia and end of life through West Lakes College. ....

The City Surrey Council approved the city’s 2021 budget, which includes a number of controversial tax increases. Passed in a five-to-four vote on Dec. 7, Budget 2021 and its five-year financial plan polarized both sides of the virtual meeting.
Mayor Doug McCallum said in a statement that while he understands not increasing the burden faced by taxpayers, “the adversity that we face now with the pandemic will eventually come to an end, and Budget 2021 plans for life after COVID by investing in public projects in the form of facilities, parks and other infrastructure projects.”
For the third year in a row, the city will see a 2.9 per cent property tax increase and a 200 per cent increase in the capital parcel tax from $100 to $300 per household. In response, city councillors Brenda Locke and Jack Hundial quit their positions on the Parcel Tax Review Committee. ....

City of Surrey on the hook for $7,000 after mayor's second crash in city-owned car

SURREY, B.C.
The City of Surrey has been left with a $7,000 bill after Mayor Doug McCallum was involved in another crash in the car the city bought for him to drive, a CTV News investigation has found.
And, even though the mayor promised to pay the costs of the car out of his annual car allowance, the city plans to forgive the debt and pay him $1,794 in car-related costs this year instead.
“He absolutely should repay the money. It still deserves an investigation into what went wrong here. This is the public trust. This is the public’s money,” said city councillor Brenda Locke. ....
