Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Thursday described the Nigerian media as being instrumental to the birthing of Nigeria. He made the assessment at the launch of a book on The Guardian and posthumous award to Mr. Alex Ibru, founder of The Guardian Newspaper which took place yesterday at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos.
Tracing the history of the Nigerian press and of the Guardian Newspaper, the Vice President said, “To grasp the significance of The Guardian, it is important to situate its odyssey within the larger Nigerian story and particularly in the context of the evolution of the fourth estate in our country. The Nigerian press has deep roots going back about 150 years. Indeed, the Nigerian press came into existence before Nigeria itself and was instrumental to the birthing of this nation.” ....

From the yearly talent show, Next of Kin, two future masters, Ikechukwu Ezeigwe and Christian Allison step up their art.
After emerging winners from the 2019 and 2020 Next of Kin editions respectively, Ikechukwu and Allison are having a joint art exhibition titled Transcendence, from April 11-26, 2021 at Thought Pyramid Art Centre, Ikoyi, Lagos.
According to Exhibition Director at Thought Pyramid Art Centre, Mr Ovie Omatsola, the art of the two artists consists of “crazy” styles that never disappoints in keeping the beholder staring at their works. Omatsola described the artists as fast excelling and noted how their art pulls the audience very close and keeps them engaged tirelessly. From a curatorial perspective, Omatsola saw creative attempt of the two artists, especially, how they grasp the level of confidence that inspires their “out of the box” skills, which ....

When it comes to environmental issues, young Swedish environmental activist, Greta Thunberg is undoubtedly, a fantastic role model but at the moment, her £24,000 statue installed at a university in her honour, has sparked anger among students.
The students have branded the sculpture a “vanity project” but the University of Winchester according to a BBC News report, believes it is the world’s first life-sized sculpture of the “inspirational” Swedish environmental activist.
The students’ union opined that the funds used for the production and installation of the statue, could have been better spent, even when the university said “no money was diverted” from student support or staffing for the project. ....

Africa’s literary colossus, Professor Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, made history on Tuesday, when he was longlisted among twelve other authors for the 2021 International Booker Prize, as both author and translator of the same book, ‘The Perfect Nine’, as well as the first nominee writing in an indigenous African Language.
With his nomination, Prof Wa Thiong’o, an 83-year-old renowned author of “Weep Not Child”, becomes the first nominee writing in an indigenous African language. A perennial Nobel Prize favourite, the Africa’s literary giant is among 13 authors nominated for the award for best translated fiction, a £50,000 prize split evenly between author and translator. ....
