Chris Janz departs Nine as James Chessell and Alex Parsons are promoted

Nine chief digital and publishing officer Chris Janz will step down after four years at the helm of the metro publishing business, initially part of Fairfax.
The former CEO of Allure Media and HuffPost Australia became Fairfax Media’s MD of metro publishing in 2016, and has served in his current role at Nine since 2018.
In his place, Nine CEO Mike Sneesby has announced that James Chessell will be promoted to the role of managing director – publishing, while Alex Parsons will take on the role of a chief digital officer.
If journalism was to be saved, there were no playbooks to be found overseas.
In the US, many city newspapers had already closed. Two-paper towns had become one-paper towns, and one-paper towns were being left without a paper at all. In part that was newspaper economics, although it was also exacerbated by the fact that many US papers were owned by debtladen companies. The only US papers that seemed to be healthy were The Washington Post, which was bought in 2013 by wealthy Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, News Corp’s Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times, which was cementing its position as the global newspaper of record in digital subscriptions.
Nine names new executive editor to oversee key mastheads

Nine’s newly promoted managing director of publishing, James Chessell, has wasted little time in naming his replacement.
Tory Maguire will take on the role of executive editor, with her remit covering The Age, The Sydney Morning Herald, Brisbane Times, and WA Today.

Maguire is currently the national editor for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, having joined Nine in 2018. The remit of which includes coverage in key areas such as national politics, business and world.
She previously served as editor-in-chief at The Huffington Post and spent over 15 years at News Corp in various roles including national opinion editor.
