Amid pandemic precautions, Bristol Bay eateries adapt

The COVID-19 pandemic has decimated restaurants across the country. But some small Bristol Bay eateries have found ways to stay open.
Tom McCulloch runs the Bayside Diner and hotel in Dillingham. He said it has reduced employee hours to make up for lost revenue.
For the most part they ve been working part time for the last 12 months and that can t last for too much longer. It s not healthy, he said.
The diner has lost around 75% of its annual sales due to the pandemic. McCulloch attributes that loss to closing the diner to indoor business last year due to COVID-19 health and safety precautions. ....

Interim City Manager Gregg Brelsford reflects on his time in Dillingham

Dillingham Interim City Manager Gregg Brelsford will leave his position next week.
Brelsford served as the Bristol Bay Borough’s manager for two years. He worked closely with Dillingham’s former city manager, Tod Larson, ahead of last year’s fishing season.
“It was very intense, it was very confusing, very fragmented, very fluid, very unpredictable, he said. So Tod and I formed a bond being the two city managers in the bay going through that together, and trying to manage the COVID risk in the first year when everything was new.”
Brelsford stepped up in January, a month after Larson left. He tackled a number of tasks during his time as Dillingham manager, including implementation of the city’s COVID-19 regulations. He said his experience in the borough gave him an understanding of what was at stake when making those decisions for small communities that see a large influx of people during the summer. ....

Bristol Bay health organizations begin to administer Johnson & Johnson vaccines after pause

The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine is available in Bristol Bay once again, after a two week pause.
The Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation announced Friday that it has started to offer J&J shots again after the CDC and the FDA lifted a pause on the single-dose vaccine on April 23.
The CDC paused use of the J&J vaccine in mid-April, after six cases of abnormal blood clotting were detected in patients who received shots. The blood clots occurred mainly in women between ages 18-49. Those instances were extremely rare the CDC said that only seven cases were reported per million women in that age group who received the vaccine. ....
