Marenfeld, D. Munizaga, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. Music: Stellardrone - Airglow. Astronomers using images from Kitt Peak National Observatory and Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory have created the largest ever map of the sky, comprising over a billion galaxies. The ninth and final data release from the ambitious DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys sets the stage for a ground-breaking 5-year survey with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), which aims to provide new insights into the nature of dark energy. The map was released today at the January 2021 meeting of the American Astronomical Society. ....
Building a Giant 2D Map of the Universe to Prepare for the Largest 3D Map Nearly 200 researchers pitched in to gather, process, and stitch together images for half of the sky to prepare for the start of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument’s observations January 13, 2021 82 Shares This video describes the monumental effort that went into constructing a 2D map of the universe to prepare for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, which will produce the largest-ever 3D map of the universe. The final data release for the preparation of this 2D map, known as Data Release 9 or DR9, was distributed Jan. 13. (Credit: Marilyn Sargent/Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory) ....
Arecibo and the Global Divide Around Funding Science Infrastructure 13/12/2020 A view of the Arecibo Telescope in July 2010. Photo: amelungc/Flickr, CC BY 2.0. A mere two weeks after the National Science Foundation declared it would close the Arecibo single-dish radio telescope – once the largest in the world – the observatory took a dramatic dying breath and collapsed on December 1, 2020. While drone footage captured the moment in excruciating detail, in truth, the disintegration of the telescope in Arecibo, Puerto Rico began far before this cinematic end. It is tempting to blame the demise of Arecibo on the physical damage it sustained earlier in 2020, when an auxiliary metal cable snapped – perhaps a delayed consequence of Tropical Storm Isaias or the earthquakes that shook Puerto Rico. But Arecibo’s downfall was, in reality, caused by years of financial struggles. ....

Research team listens to changing sound waves from the sun s interior A large sunspot is rotating onto the face of the sun. November 24, 2020 Scientists at the U.S National Science FoundationNational Solar Observatory have predicted the emergence of a new sunspot group just in time for Thanksgiving. Using a technique called helioseismology, the team has been listening to changing sound waves from the sun s interior. Recent changes in these sound waves point to the imminent appearance of a new sunspot group, which can now be seen from Earth near the eastern solar limb. We measured a change in acoustic signals on the far side of the sun, says Alexei Pevtsov, associate director of NSO s Integrated Synoptic Program. We can use this technique to identify what is happening on the side of the sun that faces away from Earth days before we can catch a glimpse from here. Having up to five days lead time on the presence of active sunspots is extremely valuable in ....
