705 The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Seth Kwame Acheampong, was at Akyem Oda last Tuesday to inspect the extent of damage to property caused by a rainstorm that hit Akyem Oda last Monday afternoon. He was accompanied by the Eastern Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr Kwame Kodua, and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akyem Oda, Mr Alexander Akwasi Acquah, and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Birim Central, Ms Victoria Adu. Places visited Among the places Mr Acheampong visited was the Attafuah Senior High School (SHS) which was the worst hit in the rainstorm. The roofs of the school’s boys and girls dormitories and the administration and library buildings as well as the headmaster’s bungalow and that of some tutors were ripped off in the storm. ....
+ The people of Akim Oda in the Birim Central Municipality of Eastern region were on Monday hit by a devastating rain storm which ripped off large portions of their houses and displaced scores of people. The extent of damage caused by the storms has been described by several people and disaster management officials as the first in recorded history in the municipality. A preliminary assessment conducted by the Municipal National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) indicates that the storm fell a lot of big trees, including the mast of the local Ofie FM radio station and ripped off roofing sheets of school buildings, churches and mosques. ....

The rainstorm lasted about two hours, following which over 1,000 people were rendered homeless and property worth millions of cedis destroyed. Among items destroyed were clothing, television sets, gas cookers, musical instruments, refrigerators, electric fans, furniture, mattresses, books and computers. Others were school registers and log books, electric poles and cables and metal containers. ....
The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) has affirmed its commitment to responsible and sustainable mining at an Environmental workshop it held for Twenty-Two (22) journalists from Sixteen (16) media organizations in Accra.
“Preserving and sustaining nature is paramount to us at GIADEC; we know it’s important too for all our stakeholders, Mr. Michael Ansah, CEO of GIADEC told the participants”.

The workshop held on Wednesday, 31st March 2021 updated the journalists on GIADEC’s strategic measures aimed at preserving the environment, including original flora, fauna and topsoil within its bauxite mining concessions at Awaso, Atewa, Mpasaaso and Nyinahin. ....
