The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources will soon table proposals before Cabinet to reform the country s mining industry. Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, the sector Minister, who said this at a media briefing in Accra on Wednesday, said the reforms would focus on amending the laws regarding the licensing, issuance of permits, sanctioning and enforcement regimes in the mining sector. In a matter of weeks, we will go before the Cabinet with a set of proposals for amendment and reforms in the mining industry to make the laws more punitive, with the ultimate objective of sanitizing the sector . Mr Jinapor said it had already begun engagement with industry players to enable them to make inputs towards the reforms, adding that, government s goal was to ensure transparency and integrity in the sector. ....
The Minister of Defence, Mr Dominic Nitiwul has noted that illegal miners have adopted a new strategy of mining at night so as to evade the security agencies from detecting their activities. He has therefore advised those engaged in night illegal mining to stop. “This is a new strategy adopted by the illegal miners. It is risky and as the Minister of Defence, I cannot guarantee their safety should they be caught by the task force”. At a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 Mr Nitiwul said that since ‘Operation Halt’ commenced, some illegal miners, in their quest to escape being apprehended, have resorted to engaging in their illegalities between 9 pm and 4 am. ....
Support President to stop illegal mining Ms Dapaah May 19, 2021 Ms Dapaah and other dignitaries inspects Birim River The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Ms Cecilia Dapaah, has called on stakeholders to support the President to stop illegal mining in the country. According to her, the activities of the illegal miners were not only destroying water bodies but treatment plants placed at river banks to refine water for distribution to the citizenry. “It is sad to note the devastation these illegal miners have caused to the water bodies. It is amazing that all their activities are close to treatment plants purchased with money to refine the water for us and we need all stakeholders and everyone to help the President to stop this menace immediately,” she said. ....
Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has described as heartbreaking and scary the effects of galamsey on the country s water bodies. Citing the Birim River, she bemoaned the fact that not only has the water body been contaminated, the illegal miners have also found a way to divert its course. . . never have I heard in my life that someone will just divert the course of a water body for selfish reasons, she lamented. Turbidity level of water bodies Mrs. Abena Dapaah who was speaking in an interview on Peace FM s morning show Kokrokoo further indicated that due to the devastating effects of galamsey, the turbidity level of the water bodies has risen beyond the required level of 50. ....
