Aside from the dreary, rainy weather, it almost felt like a normal Memorial Day weekend in New England – with the return of congested highways and traffic backups.
Traffic on the Maine Turnpike was up over 66% from last year s holiday weekend – when COVID travel restrictions remained in place – but still fell short of pre-pandemic numbers.
Nationally, AAA Travel had predicted more than 37 million people would travel 50 miles or more from their homes between May 27 and May 31. In New England alone, AAA Northeast estimated 1.6 million people would travel by car in the six-state region. People who booked trips weren t about to give them up just because of a little rain, Mark Schieldrop, public affairs specialist for AAA Northeast, said this week. There s a lot of pent-up travel demand.
Standing behind stanchions connected by black rope, customers waited patiently in line Monday for Caylee Guss to let them into tiny lululemon at Mashpee Commons. The limit had to do with the fire code, not COVID-19 restrictions, though there were mask and distancing restrictions posted.
Masks were encouraged, and there were extras on hand should a customer need one. Shoppers were advised to keep 6 feet apart. And those not feeling well were encouraged to stay home.
But business was brisk Memorial Day weekend, according to Guss, who works as a Key Leader for the store. The weather didn’t hurt them at all, she said.
After 22 years, a popular seaside pub in Falmouth Heights is closing and a new restaurant, called Shipwrecked, will open in its place on Thursday, May 27.
New owner Alex Khan from Newton closed on the British Beer Company property last week. The sale includes the adjacent 23-room Seaside Inn, renamed at The Heights Hotel.
âI want it to be Falmouth-focused and beach-focused,â Mr. Khan said.
Interior and exterior renovations are underway at the restaurant. The most obvious addition to date is the crushed-shell courtyard with dining tables and a long bar top overlooking Vineyard Sound.
The patio is a new addition.
