In the course of researching his recent book on the Countess of Desart, Murray unearthed new material on the foundation of the hospital, and the birth of healthcare in Kilkenny. ....

Mary Holt, Right-leaning Conservative MP who championed women's causes – obituary

Mary Holt, who has died aged 96, was a sparky and persuasive Lancastrian Chancery barrister who lost her seat after a single term as Conservative MP for Preston North and became a circuit judge.
On the Right of the party, she withheld her support when Edward Heath introduced a price freeze in 1972, and co-sponsored a Bill to withdraw benefits from strikers and their families.
She also sought protection for farm animals, telling the Commons: “The white veal industry is, if anything, more vile than the white slave trade. If the public realised how it was produced, most people would refuse to eat it.” ....

Commissioned in 1940, the young officer served in Palestine, survived the Battle of El Alamein, took part in the invasion of Italy and fought through North-west Europe where his fearless leadership under fire earned him the Military Cross. In the words of his citation he had shown “outstanding skill and initiative and a complete disregard for danger.”
The son of Mark and Meliora (correct) Sprot, his father had been a soldier and it had always been his ambition to follow in his footsteps. But he was forbidden to do so on leaving Stowe School in Buckinghamshire. As a result he initially worked in banking until volunteering on the outbreak of the war in 1939. ....
