Brown-John: Canada not immune to riots that threaten public buildings

Brown-John: Canada not immune to riots that threaten public buildings
by Lloyd Brown-John
Of the many books I’ve read during this COVID ordeal one by local author Herb Colling struck home as so many of us witnessed a wave of insanity almost overwhelming Washington D.C.’s Congressional building.
In “Turning Points: The Detroit Riot of 1967, A Canadian Perspective” (2003), Colling looks closely at riots in Detroit from this, usually safer, side of the border. It’s a good book and well worth a revisit as a reminder of how fast situations can get out of hand and become vicious in very short order. ....

How did I get it? Who knows? Could be the man standing uncomfortably close behind me in the supermarket coughing. Could be the colleague I had coffee with across a table who didn’t cough but did breathe, or, as I suspect, it could be from the handle of the gas station pump when I filled up my tank last week. ....

Amendment of the 1999 Constitution: The real issues

Share
ItTHE planned amendment of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999(as amended)is not the appropriate response to the ongoing clamour of the people of Nigeria for true Federalism! The simple reason is that the CFRN 1999 is more of a unitary constitution, which has been found to be unsatisfactory and unworkable in a federation. The clamour for true federalism is a reflection of the frustrations of Nigerians with the 1999 Constitution, which is simply not working and is about to turn the country into a failed state. The problems with the 1999 Constitution are incurable by the ordinary process of Legislation or constitutional amendment because the issue of centralizing trends in Nigeria’s federalism can neither be addressed nor reversed by the current National Assembly, which in itself, is a beneficiary of the lopsided structure, and is seen as part of the problem.  To put the issues in proper perspective, it is pertinent to trace the background to Nigeri ....
