WHEN it comes to pulling rabbits out of a silk hat, Blackstone may be quite a guy. But that’s just kid stuff for 51-year-old Roy Herbert Thomson, a fast-talking Torontonian who traded mumbo jumbo for supersalesmanship, a magic wand for a fountain pen and proceeded to pull hundreds of thousands of dollars literally out of thin air.
Until a few years ago, when he streamlined his five-feet ten from a lumpy 250 pounds to a cosy 185, this magician of big business deals was built somewhat along the lines of a Bartlett pear. In those days, as he squinted with nearsighted eyes from behind thick lenses or tugged with nervous fingers at a tight collar, Thomson looked no more impressive than the average businessman who ....

SHOULD CANADA maintain a Government-owned Merchant Marine? The question is one that has been raised many times in late years; particularly when Government estimates are tabled, or when money has to be voted for Canada’s excursions into State-owned transportation systems.
When things were going well with us and business was booming, deficits in the operation of our Government railroads and merchant shipping were accepted without much criticism from parliamentarians and with tolerant apathy by the average Canadian citizen.
But with the coming of the depression overworked term ! deficits in Government administrations assumed a new light, and the value of the services rendered was obscured by the unpleasant fact that they had to be paid for. And paid for out of a public treasury suffering from heavy demands and diminished revenue. ....
