Ballymurphy Massacre: Victims were innocent and killed without justification

Ten people shot dead in Ballymurphy, west Belfast in 1971 were entirely innocent and killed without justification, an inquest has found.
The nine men and one woman were killed over three days, shortly after the British Government introduced internment without trial in the North.
This afternoon, Mrs Justice Siobhan Keegan said the British Army was responsible for nine of the killings during the event, known as the Ballymurphy Massacre.
She exonerated all ten of any wrongdoing and said found that there had been a disproportionate use of force by the British Army.
She said the killings were in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights - the right to life protected by law. ....

‘Entirely innocent’
Taoiseach Micheál Martin said he was never in any doubt about the Ballymurphy killings “that these innocents were killed without any justification and that they were entirely innocent”.
He said in the Dáil that there remained “enormous personal grief and sense of loss that is renewed when intensive media attention returns to a case like this”.
“It’s been a very harrowing experience for relatives and there have been many false dawns in terms of trying to get closure and trying to get justice.”
Mr Martin also stressed that the Government was “very clear that the legacy of violence remains a deep wound and must be dealt with”. ....

Ten people killed in west Belfast almost 50 years ago in the wake of an Army operation were entirely innocent , an inquest has found.
The inquest, which began in November 2018, examined the deaths in and around the Ballymurphy area of west Belfast in August 1971.
The shootings happened after an operation in which paramilitary suspects were detained without trial.
Victims included a priest trying to help the wounded and a mother of eight.
Nine of the 10 victims were killed by the Army, the coroner said. ....

Ballymurphy massacre inquest: Coroner's findings on victims' deaths

“The evidence establishes that the deceased were unarmed and posing no threat. They were innocent people,” said Mrs Justice Keegan.
Each of the deceased were shot by the British army who were stationed in the nearby Henry Taggart Hall.
Mrs Justice Keegan said it was “very unfortunate” she had not heard accounts from soldiers involved on the day and that no one explained the military response which led to the four deaths.
She said she was satisfied there was some IRA activity in the area at the time, but she did not believe there were a large number of IRA men, but there was some evidence that shots were fired at the army. ....
