New campaign to tackle work insecurity among the low-paid

Short notice on working hours is endemic in sectors such as hospitality, where many are on low pay
Unpredictable working hours are undermining the financial security of millions of UK workers, with almost two-fifths being given less than a week’s notice of their shift or work patterns.
Research by the Living Wage Foundation found that low-paid full-time workers are hit particularly hard by uncertainty over their working hours, with 55 per cent given less than a week’s notice of their schedule. Of those, 15% get less than 24 hours.
Minority groups and women are disproportionately affected, the foundation said, with 68% of those from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds receiving less than a week’s notice of work patterns. Sixty-four percent of those with children experience the same. ....

A NEW report has found that working mothers have been one of the groups hit hardest by the pandemic.
Working Mums: Paying the Price, a report by the TUC for the week of International Women s Day, revealed that the move to home schooling and the lack of support to working parents has put huge pressure on parents, in particular working class mothers.
In response, the Lancashire Association of Trades Union Councils, which represents around 30,000 workers from across the county, has called for more help from the government to allow families to balance work and childcare.
