742 hectares (estimated size), growth is expected once a track is possible. Strong winds and steep unworkable terrain have made sections of this fire challenging to fight with direct attack strategies. Early on, ground crews effectively established a containment line on the west side of the fire that has continued to hold even in repeated strong wind events. July 19 was the most challenging day for this fire as strong winds, steep terrain, and increasingly dry fuels drove aggressive fire behaviour and created four spot fires. One of those fires grew too quickly for crews or aviation resources to contain it and it has now spread into the South Lemon Creek drainage.

Posted: April 20, 2021 New funding allocation for the Columbia Valley and surrounding areas to fund recovery advisor positions Communities and businesses throughout British Columbia’s southern interior are receiving new support for much-needed economic recovery. The Economic Trust of the Southern Interior (ETSI-BC) announced the successful funding recipients of the Rural Business and Community Recovery (RBCR) Program and the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce received funding to lead a group of partner stakeholders covering a micro region of Columbia Valley, Cranbrook, Kimberley and Golden. “We were excited with the interest shown by communities and business support organizations throughout the Southern Interior to hire Recovery Advisors through this funding,” said Laurel Douglas, CEO of ETSI-BC. “We are delighted to provide this assistance in our region with support from the Province of British Columbia as it delivers on its StrongerBC Plan.”

RDEK Board Highlights The following is a summary of some of the items covered during the April 9 Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors’ meeting. Steamboat Jubilee Mountain Official Community Plan Adopted The Board adopted Bylaw No. 3022, a new Official Community Plan (OCP) for the unincorporated communities in Electoral Area G. The new plan builds upon the first OCP for Area G that was adopted in 2006 and includes a number of updated land use polices, including new development permit requirements to mitigate the impacts of development on environmentally sensitive areas, and to help protect new construction from wildfire. Landowners proposing to undertake new construction or other land altering activities should consult the OCP and with RDEK staff to determine if their project is impacted by the new development permit requirements.
