PRINCE GEORGE  Riverside Regional Jail says an inmate who died at the prison Friday morning had a series of medical conditions and had not been evaluated by doctors at the Chesterfield County Jail from where he was transferred.
For a facility that is already in the state s crosshairs for potential closure over previous deaths, the report of Friday morning s death could not have come at a worse time. An audit committee of the Virginia Board of Local and Regional Jails is recommending that RRJ be decertified because of three other inmate deaths and the inmates be referred back to the localities served by the jail for incarceration. ....

Chesterfield County Sheriff Karl Leonard announced that he’s moving incarcerated people out of the Riverside Regional Jail, which was investigated after a series of deaths in 2019 and 2020. 
In April, a committee of Virginia’s Board of Local and Regional Jails recommended finding it responsible for the deaths of three people being held there in 2019 and 2020, as well as decertifying the facility, effectively shuttering it. ....

PRINCE GEORGE, Va. - Officials at a Virginia jail are disputing a state committee’s recommendation to shut down the jail and return inmates to their localities for holding.
The Progress-Index reports that Riverside Regional Jail officials claimed that three deaths at the facility were ones that are not always preventable for any jail.
The Riverside Regional Jail Authority, which oversees the jail, issued a statement Friday saying it doesn’t feel the recommendation is warranted since the jail had passed all state and federal audits. ....

PRINCE GEORGE, Va. (AP) - Officials at a Virginia jail are disputing a state committee’s recommendation to shut down the facility and return inmates to their localities for holding, according to a published report.
The Progress-Index reports that Riverside Regional Jail officials claimed that three deaths at the facility were ones that “are not always preventable for any jail.”
The Riverside Regional Jail Authority, which oversees the jail, issued a statement Friday saying it doesn t feel the recommendation is warranted and calling the recommendation “particularly shocking” since the jail had passed all state and federal audits. ....
