WAREHAM – Chief John Walcek’s three-plus decades of service on the Wareham Police Dept. come to a close Saturday, April 17.
He’s working right up until then.
“The day-to-day stuff keeps rolling in so I’m dealing with that,” he said last week.
He was on duty at Saturday’s massive outdoor town meeting at Spillane Field, and offered a thumb’s up to the cheering crowd when introduced by Town Moderator Claire Smith.
He demurred on interjecting himself and addressing the crowd from the podium, though.
Asked during an interview whether he was prepared for people to leap out from behind station office furniture for a surprise retirement party in these closing days, he laughed. ....

Children under the age of 18 from the Tri-Town are eligible to receive ready-made boxed meals at the YMCA and Brandy Hill Apartments.
The program, launched by the Marion Institute in collaboration with the Shah Family Foundation and the Greater Boston YMCA, offers boxed meals to-go at the two locations on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Meals are available for pickup on Tuesdays and Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. at the Brandy Hill Apartments at 12 State Street in Wareham and from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. (or until food runs out) in the Gleason Family YMCA parking lot at 33 Charge Pond Road in Wareham. ....
