January 17, 2021 Chris Perez didn’t get many opportunities to swing the bat during his seven big-league seasons. As a short reliever who played primarily in the American League, that was to be expected. Somewhat less expected was what happened when he did have a chance to dig into the batters box. “I had two [plate appearances], and I’m bitter about one of them,” Perez told me recently. “In 2008, my rookie year with St. Louis, we were in Florida at the old stadium, playing the Marlins. I came into the game in the eighth inning with one out, and got a double play with the bases loaded. When I went back to the dugout, Tony La Russa told me, ‘Hey, Chris, you’re still in there. Stay focused, because you’ve got the ninth.’” ....

The Oakland A’s appear to be keeping their front office intact for 2021, but not every MLB team is able to say the same thing this winter. Five clubs have hired new general managers since November, with the most recent coming Tuesday when the Philadelphia Phillies named Sam Fuld as their GM. Fuld played eight seasons in the majors as an outfielder for four teams, including two stints in Oakland spanning much of 2014 and all of 2015. Super Sam became a national fan favorite as a player, and has been a candidate for the manager position in various teams’ dugouts, including the Red Sox this winter. ....

First up is Daniel Mengden, who played for the A’s in 2020 but was cut from the roster at the end of the year and became a free agent. The right-hander is in talks with the KIA Tigers of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO), and while a deal isn’t official yet, it was described as “close” on Monday. If Mengden were to sign with the Tigers, he’d be reunited with manager Matt Williams, who was an A’s coach in 2018-19. He’d also join forces with former A’s pitcher/teammate ....
