Captain of Suspected Human Smuggling Boat in Custody After Boat Overturns
The man who is suspected to have operated a suspected human smuggling vessel that overturned off the coast of San Diego was taken into custody.
Authorities said that at least four people have died and more than 20 were hospitalized when the boat overturned Sunday.
“Every indication from our perspective is that this was a smuggling vessel to smuggle migrants into the United States illegally,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Supervisory Agent Jeff Stephenson said during a news conference Sunday.
Stephenson said that agents are holding the man who is suspected to be the smuggler behind the operation. The suspected captain’s name was not disclosed to the media. ....

The captain of a suspected human smuggling boat was taken into custody after the vessel overturned off the coast of San Diego on Sunday (May 2). Officials said there 29 people crammed inside the 40-foot cabin cruiser when it struck a reef near the Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma.
The boat was damaged in the collision and battered with waves of up to six feet, causing it to break apart.
The boat was on the reef, bouncing back and forth, and then slowly disintegrated into a bunch of pieces, Lifeguard Lt.
Four people died in the accident, and one person remains hospitalized in critical condition. The other 24 people on the boat survived, though they sustained injuries, including hypothermia and cuts and bruises from pieces of the ship. Officials said they pulled six survivors from the water while the others managed to swim to shore. ....

Tennessee protestors could face harsher punishments for blocking roadways. One bill, HB 513/SB 843, would raise the offense of obstructing traffic during demonstrations to a felony.
Opponents of the bill are concerned of the chilling effect this could have on the state’s freedom of assembly.
A lot of attention has been on the fact that the bill would grant immunity from prosecution to drivers who unintentionally injure or kill protestors illegally blocking their path, as long as they are “exercising due care”.
But the legislation also dictates that those protesters would face tougher criminal charges, including a fine of $3,000 and up to six years in prison. ....

The person believed to have been operating a suspected smuggling vessel that overturned off the coast of San Diego Sunday, killing three people, is in custody.
There were 32 people aboard the 40-foot cabin cruiser, including the captain, when the boat hit the reef and broke apart near the Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma around 10:30 a.m. PT, authorities said in an update Monday.
Twenty-nine people survived and three died, officials said. Among five remaining in the hospital, one is in critical condition, according to a news release from the US Coast Guard 11th District PA Detachment San Diego. The Coast Guard indicated Sunday more than 20 people were sent to the hospital. ....
