Analysis: The Pelicans did everything they could with the picks they had. Desperately in need of some defenders and some shooting, New Orleans got a bit of both with its two picks. Murphy is one of the top 3-and-D prospects in this class and his draft stock skyrocketted following the NBA Combine. He s a knockdown shooter, which will space the floor for Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, but he s also a smart cutter, which bodes well for when the defence focuses too much on those two stars. His long arms, IQ and great anticipation make him a sound defender. ....

The 2021 NBA draft will begin at 8:00 p.m. ET in Brooklyn, New York with the Detroit Pistons holding the top pick. The Houston Rockets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic will round out the top five selections. The Pistons, according to Adrian Wojnarowski, have settled on taking Cade Cunningham with the first overall pick.

Russell Westbrook joined LeBron James and Anthony Davis on the Los Angeles Lakers in a blockbuster NBA trade deal with the Washington Wizards according to multiple reports on Thursday.
The 32-year-old guard joins playmaker James and dominant big man Davis on the 2020 NBA championship squad with hopes of a “Big Three” lineup making the Lakers a title threat in 2022.
The deal as reported by ESPN, USA Today and The Athletic sends Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope plus the 22nd pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft to the Wizards for Westbrook and two future second-round NBA Draft picks. ....

Lakers to acquire Russell Westbrook from Wizards in trade

The Los Angeles Lakers reached a deal to acquire triple-double king Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards in a trade for Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Montrezl Harrell and the No. 22 pick in Thursday s NBA draft, two people familiar with trade talks told USA TODAY Sports.
The people requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about ongoing negotiations.
Westbrook, 32, is a Los Angeles native and nine-time All-Star, who was traded to Washington after spending a season with the Houston Rockets. It will be the third straight offseason Westbrook has been traded.
Westbrook spent his first 11 NBA seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder, establishing himself as one of the game s most explosive players who can fill up the stat sheet every night. He won the league s MVP award in 2017 and is the league s career leader in triple-doubles with 184, breaking Oscar Robertson s 47-year-old career mark last season. ....
