The win clinched a spot in the four-team Northeast Conference Tournament for the Statesmen, who can secure the No. 2 seed and a semifinal home game with a win over Sacred Heart on Saturday. In OT, senior Drew Blanchard capped a sterling effort at the X, winning the opening faceoff thanks to a crafty ground ball pickup by classmate Dan Ryan. Hobart advanced the ball into the box and called timeout to draw up the final play. Hobart College sophomore goalie Kevin Holtby made a career-high 23 saves to lead the Statesmen to an 11-10 Northeast Conference men’s lacrosse win over Bryant University today. Hobart improved to 3-1 overall and 3-1 in the NEC, while the Bulldogs saw their four-game winning streak end, slipping to 5-2, 3-1. Holtby stood tall in the fourth quarter, making 10 saves, including two in the final minute as Hobart killed off a pair of penalties to preserve the one-goal lead. His 23 stops are the most by a Statesman since Max Silberlicht ’10 recorded 23 saves against Syracuse on March 23, 2010.

Especially since the Statesmen were opening their season against a Mount St. Mary’s team that was blasted by 12 goals against Georgetown earlier this week. So when Hobart took the early lead on Saturday with goals from Jason Knox and Bradley Simas it appeared the Statesmen were on their way. But then the problems you might expect from a team playing its first real game in a full calendar year popped up, and the Mountaineers were all over it.
