An encounter in a Bingley pub with Peter Sutcliffe | Bradford Telegraph and Argus

FORMER Bradford Grammar School teacher Dr Andrew Liddle recalls an encounter with a man he later learned was Peter Sutcliffe.
‘C’mon, lad, let’s get us sens across t’t Ferrands,’ he said, bossily. ‘There’s nowt happening here!’
The announcement last November of the death of Peter William Sutcliffe, otherwise known as the Yorkshire Ripper, brought these words back to me - and at that moment I found myself looking down the vista of 50 or more years to when they were spoken.
Being then, as now, a great fan of New Orleans jazz, my Monday nights were spent at the Old King’s Head in Bingley, later demolished to make way for the Bradford & Bingley Building Society. It was exactly right for a jazz pub, a bit on the shabby side but with perfect acoustics and it was spruced up considerably by three giant black and white drawings of jazz greats. The piano was beat-up but highly strung, ideal for the type of music. ....

PLANS for a flood easing scheme at Apperley Bridge have been submitted to Bradford Council.
The proposal, for land adjacent to the River Aire between Calverley Bridge and Apperley Bridge, includes flood defences.
Step Two of the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme Phase 2 would include a Flood Storage Reservoir, with plant and machinery, and flood defences to include walls, sheet piling, earth bunds, scour protection and associated access, landscaping, demolition, building and construction works.
The granting of planning permission does not affect owners’ rights to retain or dispose of their property, unless there is some provision to the contrary in an agreement or in a lease. ....

Keighley announce sad passing of Welsh club legend

Brian passed away a few days ago in his sleep at the age of 86.
Keighley posted their own obituary for Brian on their club website, and you can read it below:
Originally from Cardiff, the Whitcombe family moved north, when Brian (who was only one year old) and Frank s father, Frank Snr, signed professional forms to play rugby league for Broughton Rangers in Manchester in 1935.
Following a transfer to Bradford Northern in 1938, the Whitcombe family set up home in Wibsey.
Brian and his brother played for Sedbergh Boys RL Club in their early teens but Frank Snr thought that they would be better off playing rugby union for Bradford at Lidget Green, so he took them there, where they played for many years. ....

Call for volunteers to help local scout groups

A CALL has gone out for volunteer leaders to help run the district’s popular scout groups after numbers fell during the pandemic.
In the biggest recruitment drive the area has ever held, the appeal is being targeted at any adult who can offer help in any way, from leading groups to giving occasional or parental support.
“The pandemic has had a massive impact on us. Adult volunteers are vital to keep groups going, but some have had to self-isolate and others have had a change in or heir circumstances and are unable to volunteer,” said Stephen Rawlinson, development officer with Bradford North District Scouts. ....
