Bridgeport Police Union Members Vote 'No Confidence' In City's First Latina Chief

Members of the police union in Bridgeport, Connecticut, have voted “no confidence” in the city’s first Latina chief 54% of union members in attendance Wednesday voted against Acting Chief Rebeca Garcia.
Garcia was appointed acting chief after her predecessor was arrested by the FBI in a job rigging scandal. He pleaded guilty.
Bridgeport city officials claimed in a statement that only about 25% of total union members voted against Acting Chief Garcia, due to low turnout at the union meeting.
Union President and Police Sgt. Brad Seely said the city needs to take concerns about the acting chief and low morale seriously. He said he did not give city officials information about turnout. Seely said a “significant” number of union members voted, but did not confirm numbers for WSHU. ....

BRIDGEPORT Police union officials said they plan to meet to determine their next step following Wednesday’s no confidence vote in Acting Chief Rebeca Garcia.
“Our executive board will meet to determine ways we can move forward from this vote,” said Union President Sgt Brad Seely. He said eventually union leadership plan to meet with the mayor’s office to deliver their concerns.
He did not specifically discuss the union’s initial demand after the vote was counted that Garcia be immediately replaced. ....

BRIDGEPORT The city’s police union voted no confidence in Acting Police Chief Rebeca Garcia on Wednesday.
Fifty-four percent of the union membership who voted chose to ask Mayor Joseph Ganim to appoint another acting police chief immediately. Union officials would not disclose the numbers of the vote.
“The results of our vote clearly indicate that the Bridgeport Police Department is hurting and needs to address the underlying issues that trouble our dedicated officers,” said Union President Sgt. Brad Seely. “We did not undertake this vote lightly or without consideration of its impact. And I want to stress that the vote is not simply about labor relations problems. ....
