Proposed Luxury Tax on Expensive Gas Cars Would Pay for Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

The proposed measure, HB 1142, would apply a 1 percent general excise tax surcharge on cars with a manufacturer s suggested retail price, or MSRP, of more than $60,000. The collected funds would go int a Public Utilities Commission special fund for electric vehicle charging stations.
The bill was heard at the House Committee on Consumer Protection and Commerce Tuesday.
Those opposing the bill included car dealers, which argue that family vehicles and work trucks would be subject to the additional tax.
Brad Nicolai, president and CEO of JN Automotive Group, noted the negative effects of a national luxury tax from the 1990s.
If we just referenced what happened in 1991, when there was a luxury tax of 10 percent that was imposed on vehicles that were over $30,000, it had a negative impact over two years in which nationally our industry declined over 23 percent, Nicolai said. There’s a Big Move In the Works for MW Restaurant
The popular eatery is closing Dec. 31 and reopening in a new space along with its recently shuttered Artizen café.

Fans of MW Restaurant have two more weeks to order takeout. The popular eatery by the husband-wife team of Michelle Karr-Ueoka and Wade Ueoka is closing at the end of the year and reopening in the Symphony Honolulu building in early 2021.

The one-month closure aside, the move looks like a win. MW’s new home will be in the glass-fronted Viaggio spot on the second floor of Symphony, roughly four blocks down Kapʻiolani Boulevard from its current home. Downstairs, the couple plan to resurrect Artizen, the casual downtown café they closed in late summer. There was some urgency here: The lease for MW, which opened seven years ago in the former KGMB-TV building, is expiring. And paying a fixed rent when the fine-dining eatery had switched to an all-takeout pandemic ....
