Queenstown developers make 'Rich List' splash

National Business Review’s online Rich List.
Part-time local Fraser Sanderson, who’s developing commercial and residential property behind his former Queenstown Country Club retirement village, is valued at $225 million.
The Porter brothers, Alastair, John and Neville, who’ve developed commercial, retail and residential property at Frankton’s Remarkables Park, are valued at $200m.
Sanderson’s ranked 19th amongst NBR’s property-related Rich Listers and the Porters are 20th.
Sanderson sold Queenstown Country Club and two Tauranga villages to Arvida for $180m in 2019.
However,
NBR says it’s not so well known he’s retained more than 30ha of adjoining land, which he’s developing under the banner of Queenstown Commercial. ....

A former Queenstowner’s told the tale of an unsung heroine of the Whakatipu goldfields.
The Nine Lives of Kitty K. is an historical novel about the incredible life of Kitty Kirk (1855-1930), who was known for her daring rides on horseback to deliver supplies to Skippers miners in mid-winter.
Arguably one of the toughest women in Otago history, some hailed her as a heroine while others called her a harlot.
The novel depicting turbulent times including the 1890s depression was written by 91-year-old Margaret Mills, who lived in Queenstown between 1951 and 1978 and was married to one-time New Zealand ski racer Johnny Mills, who died in ’97. ....

The name Wakatipu is likely to be updated on signs, buildings and open spaces around the Queenstown area to reflect traditional Māori spelling and pronunciation.
In November, Ngai Tahu elder Sir Tipene O Regan said it was time to update and correct the historically inaccurate name given by European settlers to the southern lake.
The correct spelling, Whakatipu , is pronounced in English as if with a ph at the start.
