MUMBAI: Conviction in cybercrime cases continues to be abysmally low, especially in the city. In the period 2017 to 2019, for which data has just been released, 1,682 men were arrested in Mumbai for various cyber offences, out of whom only 14 were convicted.
Among women suspects, out of 82 arrested in the three years, none has been convicted. The main reasons for poor conviction, experts feel, are a lack of proper evidence collection, delay in getting technical information and support from agencies, a lack of proper investigation and a general paucity of knowledge in dealing with cybercrime.

Tackling cybercrime will require more investment in infrastructure and trained manpower. Dedicated cyber police stations and courts to try such offences have been long-pending demands which are yet to be fully met.
