The Indian team s trip to Switzerland for the Archery World Cup in Lausanne has been called off after the Swiss Embassy s refusal to issue short-term visas due to COVID-19 restrictions put on travellers from the Asian country.
India is battling a surge in COVID-19 cases, with the country recording over 409,000 new cases yesterday as well as more than 4,100 new deaths.
Lausanne is due to host the second World Cup of the season, following last month s in Guatemala City, from May 17 to 23.
The event was crucial for the Indian women s team as they seek to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. ....

NEW DELHI: India s Olympic-bound recurve archery team’s visit to Switzerland for World Cup Stage 2 in Lausanne from May 17 to 23 has been called off after the Swiss Embassy’s refusal to issue short-term visas in view of the flying ban imposed on Indian travellers on account of the raging Covid-19 pandemic here.
The tournament in Lausanne was crucial to Indian women archers’ preparations for the Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Paris from June 21 to 27, which will serve as the final team qualification event for the Tokyo Games.
India is yet to secure a women’s team quota place for the Olympics, as two-time Olympian Deepika Kumari has earned an individual quota for the Games and is assured to travel to Tokyo. ....

India’s Olympic-bound archers will not get to compete in the Stage 2 World Cup in Lausanne as their short-term visa application has been rejected by the Switzerland Embassy.
India has been battling a second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic that has forced many countries to ban travellers from India.
The Indian archers will now directly compete in the Stage 3 World Cup in Paris which will be the last Olympic qualification event for the Indian women’s recurve team. The seven-day competition will begin on June 23. ....

New Delhi, May 6 : The eight-member Indian recurve archery team, including four in the women s category, will not compete in the Lausanne World Cup starting May 17 due to failure to get visas.
The European nations are denying visas due to the second wave of Covid-19 in India. Even if we travel, there is a strict 10-day quarantine rule in Switzerland. With time running out, the best option was to skip the competition and focus on the Paris edition of the World Cup in June, which is also an Olympic qualifying competition, Pramod Chandurkar, secretary general of Archery Association of India (AAI), told IANS. ....

Compound archery coach tests 'false positive' but team withdrawn from World Cup


KOLKATA, Apr 17: India’s compound archers were left high and dry after the national federation on Saturday barred them from boarding the flight to Guatemala for the World Cup Stage 1 after their coach’s “false positive” test report for COVID-19.
The Sonepat-based compound archers were to join the Olympic-bound recurve team at Delhi airport to catch a 2.50am flight on Saturday to Amsterdam en route Guatemala City for the April 19-25 World Cup Stage I.
After hearing that compound team coach Gaurav Sharma had tested positive for COVID-19 at SAI, Sonepat on Thursday, the Archery Association of India decided not to allow them to join the recurve team. The compound archers were left “stranded” on Karnal Bypass till late at night on Friday. ....
