Nine schools took part in the trial and there are currently four schools running the scheme in Brighton and Hove. Westdene Primary would join Brunswick Primary, St Luke’s Primary, Downs Infant, Downs Junior, St Nicolas CE Primary in closing the road outside school gates. The school is closing Barn Rise for the full day so pupils can take part in activities on bike safety, air pollution and active travel, the council said.
BOLLARDS are now in place at a junction as part of “semi-permanent” measures to make a road safer near a school. The junction between Somerhill Road and Lansdowne Road in Hove has been closed to motor vehicles as part of the School Streets scheme, ahead of pupils’ return to the classroom on Monday. The trial closure, which has been brought in through an experimental traffic regulation order, means only cyclists and pedestrians can enter Somerhill Road from its southern end. Motor vehicles will also not be able to access Somerhill Road from the opposite end, south of the junction with Somerhill Avenue, between 8am and 10am and between 2pm and 4pm on school days during term time, as part of the School Streets scheme outside Brunswick Primary School.

Brighton and Hove City Council is introducing the next phase of the School Streets scheme and trialling new measures “to determine which model works best in the long term . The scheme aims to to support physical distancing outside schools, promote active travel and make roads safer. Included in the next phase of the scheme are measures to shut two junctions in the city to motorists completely - as well as road closures outside three schools during drop-off and pick-up hours.
